Scoutmaster Minute – Scouting Statistics – Recreation

As you may recall from last week, researchers surveyed about 2,500 adult males and discovered 46 differences between those never in Scouts, those in Scouts for a while, and Eagle Scouts.  Since tonight is our fun night, I’ll cover those differences related to recreation.

Just by being in Scouts, you are 60% more likely to go sailing, canoeing, or kayaking as an adult.  You are 40% more likely to go fishing.  This is probably because you have an opportunity to learn these things in Scouts.

Just by being in Scouts, you are 10 % more likely to go to a park and 40% more likely to go camping.  If you make Eagle Scout, then you are 40% more likely to go to a park and 95% more likely, or almost twice as likely, to go camping.  As you progress in Scouting, nature and camping just become part of who you are.

Just by being in Scouts, you are 40% more likely to go to concerts or plays.  If you make Eagle Scout, then you are 70% more like to attend such events.  If you make Eagle Scout, then you are also 40% likely to actually play a musical instrument as an adult.  Maybe you grow to like music and acting from all of the songs and skits that you see and perform around the campfire.

Fun is an important part of life.  Staying healthy adds years to your life, and having fun adds life to your years.  Besides teaching you leadership and advancement, Scouting teaches you how to have fun!
